How to take care of wood flooring

Wood floors are extremely durable, but they still need a little TLC to keep them looking their best. Here are some basic tips for keeping hardwood floors clean and preserved.

Day-to-day maintenance

Keep your floors clean by sweeping or vacuuming regularly (with the appropriate attachment), and dust mopping as needed.

Deep cleaning

In addition to daily cleaning, wood floors should be cleaned with a special wood floor cleaner every month or so. Never use water or other liquids, as they can damage the finish and leave rings on your floor.

Spills and stains

Treat spills promptly; don’t let them sit on the floor for any length of time before wiping them up. To remove stains, use a commercial wood cleaner or a mild detergent mixed with water, but be sure to check manufacturer recommendations first. Never use oil soap, which can dull the finish.

As with any type of floor, you need to properly care for it in order to make it last.

Here are a few tips to keep your wood floor looking great:

Wipe up spills immediately. Too much moisture can damage the floor, so be sure to wipe up any spills as soon as possible.

Use mats at doorways and entryways. This is a good way to keep dirt and debris from being tracked onto the floor.

Place felt pads under furniture legs and chairs. These will help prevent scratches on your wood flooring when you move furniture around.

Clean regularly with a dry or damp mop. If you spill something sticky, be sure to use a damp mop, but otherwise a dry mop is all that’s needed for daily maintenance. A vacuum cleaner with the hardwood setting works well, too.

Wood floors are one of the most popular types of flooring. More than half of U.K. homes have them, and they’re far more common than carpeting or other types of flooring.

The reason for their popularity is simple: Wood flooring is extremely versatile. It’s available at a wide range of price points, from inexpensive laminate to high-end real wood. There’s also a huge variety of styles, including solid hardwood, engineered wood, parquet and bamboo. You can contact QC Flooring for more information.

No matter what type you choose, though, you’ll want to keep it looking its best for as long as possible. Over time, wood floors are likely to show signs of wear and tear — but with proper care, you can limit the damage and keep your floors looking beautiful for years to come.

What You Need Before You Start

To keep your wood floors clean, you don’t need much: a broom or dry mop to remove loose dirt and dust; a damp mop or rag to wipe up spills; and some mild soap in warm water if your floors require a deeper cleaning. However, there are also a number of products on the market that are designed specifically to clean hardwood floors and help protect them against damage.
