General Rules

The rug you select should be bigger than your dining room table, whether it’s a small table for four or an extra-large 10-seater. All of the chair legs should remain on the carpet when your guests back away from the table.

Keep the size, shape, and layout of your dining room in mind. You don’t want the rug to be too large and overpower the space. The carpet shouldn’t touch the edges of other furniture such as a china cabinet or buffet table. You also don’t want a rug that’s too small to get lost in the room.

Small Table

A small dining room table generally accommodates four people and measures 36”x36” (square table) or 36” in diameter (round table). It would be best to go with an 8’x8’ square rug for a square table or an 8′ round rug for a round table. If the room is big enough, you could experiment with a 5’x7′, 6’x9’, or 8’x10’ rug as long as the carpet doesn’t get too close to the walls.

Medium Table

Six people can sit at a medium dining room table which typically measures about 36”x60”. An 8’x10’ rug would allow 30” of carpet around the table. A 7’x9’ rug may work as well. The general rule of thumb is to have 24”-30” inches of rug showing on all four sides.

Large Table

A large dining room table usually seats eight people and measures 40”-48” inches wide and 78”-96” long. A 9’x12′ or 8’x10’ rug would be ideal for this setup. Either size would give you at least 24” of carpet around the sides of the table.

Extra-Large Table

Ten people can gather at an extra-large dining table that’s 42”-48” wide and 108”-144” long. A 10’x14’ rug should be big enough to cover the floor under the table with extra carpet at the sides.
