Culinary Adventures in Kosovo: Part I

(Working title: How I Gained 10 pounds in Less Than 2 Weeks)

I’m not even sure where to start.

The husband and I just got back from a two week adventure in the Balkans.  The whole trip came about because Lindi’s lovely sister was getting married. Lindi’s family is 100% Albanian and generations, as far back as anyone can remember, have lived in Kosovo. His family is quite large and very close-knit. On one of our first dates, I remember him telling me that he had *26* first cousins. I laughed, first out of shock because I thought he was kidding, and then from hilarity because he had basically just directly quoted  My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I laughed then, but I had no idea how closely the movie would actually come to my real life later (i.e. large Mediterranean family with lots of traditions vs. my white bread American family)!

Honestly, the entire two weeks is a bit of a blur to me – full of the meeting of a myriad  of family members, the consumption of ridiculous amounts of amazing food, the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen, and dancing until I literally couldn’t feel my feet.

Need I say… it was a success?!

Part I of our adventures is a photo essay of our food experience. I didn’t get nearly as many pictures as I would have liked of what we ate, but I really didn’t want my first impression of the extended family to be that “crazy blonde who takes pictures of everything she eats”, ya know?

Anyway, I’ll give you pictures now and a more thorough explanation later.

  1. I can’t wait for your next posting!!! I’m trying to guess what is the dish with some type of dough being spread over a bed of greens. (And by the way, you have 17 first cousins yourself!)

  2. yay! so happy for you! pictures are beautiful. you two are a dream. can’t wait to hear about it!
